Darts are folds sewn into fabric to help provide a three-dimensional shape to a garment. They are frequently used in women's clothing to provide a fit that closely follows the shape of the wearer. They are essential to give the garment a specific shape usually to enhance the wearers figure.

1. Standard 4 darts
These types of darts are used on the back of garments to give them a tight fight around the body.

2. Arms Eye darts
These darts are around the arms of a garment to tighten any loose fabric around the arm and allow for movement.

3.  Centre Front darts
These darts are found at the front of the dress. they run down the torso of a dress to pin the fabric close to the body.

4. H Darts
These darts are ontop and below the waistline. The resemble the letter 'H'.

5. French Darts
This dart goes underneath the bust line, just above the waist. This is to give the chest more space.

6. Irregular darts
These are darts placed at random in different parts of the garments to create different shapes.

7.Princess Seam
Princess seams are long shaped seams which can be found on the front or back of a garment. They are usually used specifically in women's fashion, since princess seams are designed to make a garment fit smoothly and snugly. Many form fitting garments such as formal gowns are made with princess seams. As a general rule, princess seams are used instead of darts, although the two may sometimes be found on the same garment.
