2. Deconstruction

"I spent a long time learning how to construct clothes, which is important to do before you can deconstruct them." - Alexander McQueen

The term deconstruction has been used to describe the rebellion against traditional forms in art.

This is a video I came across on YouTube. Alexander McQueen first makes the suit before he tears it apart and deconstructs it. This is the clearest way to demonstrate the meaning of garment deconstruction.

The thing i like about this is that most deconstructed garments on a runway are very striking but this is such a subtle way of garment deconstruction. It is simply deconstructed layers of fabric attached to a simple piece which make the garment look elegant.

What i like about this garment is that lots of different materials in different colours and textured have been
combined to make this stunning dress. I like the way this dress doesn't fall straight down the body... it almost
wraps around the body.

Alison Gill: Deconstruction Fashion, 1998
Gill defines deconstruction in terms of fashion as garments that are unfinished, coming apart, recycled, transparent and grunge. Elements of her garment deconstruction include vintage linings sewn on the outside of clothes, exposed zippers and seams.

In this dress by Margiela different fabrics are weaved together and have the appearance that they have been teared and ripped apart. The long draping pieces of fabric teamed with the rough uneven texture of this dress show us a different type of fashion deconstruction then in the designers before.

Another type of garment deconstruction which is very commonly seen on the high-street is the deconstruction of knit.

Issey Miyake

This dress by Issey Miyake show how deconstructed gaerments can still have clean lines and that is not all about tears, rips and slashes. The exposed open zips and the fabric wrapping around to keep the zips open is a very controlled way of deconstruction. It is still breaking the 'Fashion Rules' by exposing seams and zips.
