Slippery Garment

I have 2 slippery garments to pick from.. one high fashion garment... and the other a very un fashionable garment...

Wetsuits - An obvious one..

Gareth Pugh
I picked this garment as Pugh uses shiny slippery leather and the design on the body of the dress reminds me of the scales I was researching earlier this week.

Swatches

Here are some of my sample swatches for my mood boards. I'm gonna put 2 or 3 together to make my final swatch.

Acidic - Bleached Black fabric

Acidic - Bleach fabric , random patterns have little control over the bleach.

Acidic - Bleach crepe paper.. dissolves as the bleach weakens the paper.

Acidic - Wax on fabric

Acidic - Burnt fabric

Acidic - Burnt netting over black plastic

Acidic - Burning fabric that has a high content of plastic... melts more then it burns.

Silhouette - Black fabric on netting to resemble silhouettes

Silhouette - of skyline

Silhouette - just illustrating the outlines of silhouettes

Slippery - Blue material dipped in wax.. once dried I crunched it to resemble breaking of glass.

Slippery - White fabric dipped in wax and wax broken to resemble ice

Slippery - Layers of wax on fabric to resemble spilling

Slippery -Layers of wax from the side

Slippery - To resemble fish scales. put fabric over wire mesh and rubbed charcoal over it to resemble this pattern.

Sense Project

So today in college Mairéad had us sit in groups and brainstorm words for each individual sense... we then put all the sheets on the wall and picked our favourite word from each sense.. just a word that simply appealed yo us for no particular reason. my five words were:

Touch - Sticky
Smell - Damp
Sight - Silhouette
Hear - Ringing
Taste - Acidic

We then narrowed it down to three and the three I picked are Sticky, Silhouette and Acidic. After this we went back to our groups and went through each persons word and came up with action words that fit to these words and then we discussed it at as a class. Some of the words I found the most interesting are:

Slippery - Pouring, Spilling, Dropping, Icing, Raining, Throwing, Moving, Passing, Breaking.
Silhouette - Tracing, Stencilling, Printing, Shadowing, Lighting, Moving, Shaping.
Acidic - Bleaching, Spilling, Melting, Bubbling, Peeling, Erupting, Dissolving.

And now the fun starts. we start developing swatches that apply to these senses, we find artists/designers/scientists that have investigated these processes and then a garment (not particularly high fashion) that fits into our theme.

I really like this way of brainstorming, you give people ideas and I got alot of ideas from other people :)

20. Darts

Darts are folds sewn into fabric to help provide a three-dimensional shape to a garment. They are frequently used in women's clothing to provide a fit that closely follows the shape of the wearer. They are essential to give the garment a specific shape usually to enhance the wearers figure.

1. Standard 4 darts
These types of darts are used on the back of garments to give them a tight fight around the body.

2. Arms Eye darts
These darts are around the arms of a garment to tighten any loose fabric around the arm and allow for movement.

3.  Centre Front darts
These darts are found at the front of the dress. they run down the torso of a dress to pin the fabric close to the body.

4. H Darts
These darts are ontop and below the waistline. The resemble the letter 'H'.

5. French Darts
This dart goes underneath the bust line, just above the waist. This is to give the chest more space.

6. Irregular darts
These are darts placed at random in different parts of the garments to create different shapes.

7.Princess Seam
Princess seams are long shaped seams which can be found on the front or back of a garment. They are usually used specifically in women's fashion, since princess seams are designed to make a garment fit smoothly and snugly. Many form fitting garments such as formal gowns are made with princess seams. As a general rule, princess seams are used instead of darts, although the two may sometimes be found on the same garment.

19. Knotting

A knot is a method of fastening or securing linear material such as rope. It may consist of a length of one or several segments of rope, string, webbing, twine, strap or fabric interwoven such that the line can bind to itself or to some other object.
