A simple definition of Asymmetry in fashion is where one side of the body does not match the other. This is a technique seen everywhere in the fashion world

Alexander McQueen Spring 2011 |
Alexander Mcqueen uses asymmetrical designs in the majority of his collects to create more organic and random shapes.

Asymmetry can be cause by simple manipulations as well as dramatic manipulations. Versace focused all the ruffles of the first dress to the right which creates asymmetry. Another thing Versace uses to put asymmetry in the designs is putting a slit up one side of the dress.
Christian Dior Spring/Summer 2012 |
Christian Dior Spring/Summer 2012 |
Christian Dior uses a single strap to create asymmetry in his designs.
Viktor and Rolf Spring/Summer 2010 |
Viktor and Rolf uses dramatic fabric manipulation to create asymmetric designs. These designs hit the runway in 2010 and in my opinion they tool asymmetry to a whole new level which work extremely well to create fascinating dresses.
